Sony vs Sony: HipHopGamer Shows why they hurt themselves more than the competition do

14 08 2008

When was the last time you saw something like this during a commercial break.

Exactly my point! here’s the list of what i think Sony needs to do to not just continue a good year over year momentum but to be able to dominate once again as industry leader.

1. More Marketing – PS2 had so much marketing that it was literally the face of the videogame industry, but right now that isn’t the case 360 is becoming the standard of the videogame industry here’s my examples. when you watch TV, car commercials, movies, there’s always a reference to xbox 360 whether it is mentioned or just shown on the TV screen now, PS2 had that same effect but with PS3 the only tv show it was ever on that I remeber was heros when they were playing heavenly sword other than that it’s non-existent.

2. Mass Market Price- The longer they take for that to happen the longer it will take for them to dominate. We’ve seen sony outsell 360 at a higher price point since the ending of last year all the way to current. Once the prices are matched or become mass market with the features PS3 offer then and only then will the industry see Sony reclaim the lead.

3. Meeting deadlines – False announcements always make a company lose credibility and Sony is at the top of the food chain when it comes to broken promises. Follow the footsteps of Qore they announced same week it came out. Life with PS3 where is it, Home where is it,  More online features where is it. They have to step they game up before loyal fans start becoming 360’s loyal fans

4. Third Party Developers – Make them use the PS3 power to exploit 360’s disc space issues. Make more games that only PS3 can pull off successfully in order to show 360’s weakness as far as lack of hard drive and lack of disc space.

5. Make Trophies Universal across all games – consumers will love that and spend more time on the PS3 than ever before

That’s it for me Please Respond I would love to hear everyone’s opinion on this. 1Luv and God Bless Peace.

Very nice article. Here’s what I have to say about it:

1. When it comes to marketing, I have to agree, Sony does need to market the PS3 more but I definantly think that Sony needs to advertise their games more on T.V. as well.

But honestly I’ve seen Sony market the PS3 console more than Microsoft has marketed the Xbox 360 console on T.V., and I’m referring to them actually advertising their consoles in commercials, not just Xbox 360 games. The last time I saw a commercial in which Microsoft was Advertising the Xbox 360 console itself, it was around the launch of Halo 3… it was that Xbox 360 commercial with the parachute guy and I think he was holding a 360 in his arms while flying through the air and at the end of the commercial there was like 2 or 3 people sitting on a couch or on a chair playing the 360.

However, last Fall, Sony was running that same commercial that you posted for MONTHS. I saw that PS3 commercial on T.V. for at least 3 months or possibly even more and there was some days when I would see that commercial 3 or 4 times a day. As a matter of fact, I remember when I went to the Movie Theater last Fall to see a movie and, I saw that same PS3 commercial…. Plus, I’ve seen other PS3 commercials from Sony this year too, like that other PS3 commercial with GT5 Prologue, LittleBigPlanet,MGS4, Unreal Tournament 3 and Rachet and Clank… I saw that commercial tons of times earlier this year as well.

But that Microsoft commercial that was advertising the 360 that I was talking about didn’t run that long. I remember I saw it on T.V. for a good month or so, but the PS3 commercials ran for WAY much longer.

I do think that Sony needs to advertise their games more, but when it comes to advertising the PS3 itself I think that they’ve been doing a pretty good job since last Fall… but I guess the only downside is that I haven’t seen Sony advertise the PS3 much lately… Oh yea, and I don’t know about you HipHopGamer or anyone else, but I still see Metal Gear Solid 4 commercials on T.V. and I’ve been seeing them every week that I watch WWE Smackdown.

But really I think one of the main reasons why whenever you see a 3rd party game adverised on T.V. it’s almost always advertised by Microsoft because as we all know, Microsoft depends on 3rd party a LOT and they pour whatever they can into 3rd party games and advertising whenever they have the chance. From my observations I think that Sony tends to put their money towards advertising PS3 exclusives over 3rd party games and that’s why I think Sony rarely advertises 3rd party games… plus, Sony has already said that for them 1st party is their top priority, so that basically confirms that advertising 3rd party games extensively isn’t the top of Sony’s list.

2. When it comes to Mass Market Price, the PS3 is slowly but surely making it’s way in that direction but it will take a while… I really wish that Sony could get the PS3’s price down to $299.99 by next Summer and $349.99 by this Christmas at least…. it would be nice if Sony could drop the PS3 to $299.99 this Christmas, but I just can’t see the PS3 being $299.99 until sometime next year though.

But in reality, the PS3 will most likely never be the same price as the 360 and will more than likely always be a little bit more expensive than the 360…. when it comes to future PS3 sales, I think that it’s going to boil down to the loyal Playstation fanbase, Blu-ray, and people being able to see Value of a console before Price. Price does matter, but there are plenty of people that would pay a little extra to get something of more Value and Longevity like the PS3.

But personally I think that once the PS3 reaches $299.99 the PS3 will be outselling the 360 regardless of 360’s lower price point because by that time the PS3 will be MUCH more affordable and the PS3’s value will FAR exceed that of the 360 by then.

3. When it comes to meeting deadlines, sometimes I think that Sony announces stuff too early when it’s not really completely ready and sometimes I think that it just takes Sony TOO long to get something done.

4. When it comes to 3rd party developers, there’s not that much Sony can do to make them to exploit the PS3 even more, but Sony needs to release resources and tools to 3rd party developers to help them get up to speed with the PS3 and that would really help a lot. I know that Insomniac has been doing something similiar to this by releasing some of their tools and code used in their games to help other developers and I definantly am greatful that a Independent studio like Insomniac is looking out for Sony.

When it comes to 3rd party developers, I think that more of them need to convince themselves to use the PS3 even more and utilize it to bring out the best in this generation of gaming. We are already seeing a number of upcoming games that were led on the PS3 first, and as this trend continues, we should be seeing 3rd party developers finally tap into the PS3 like so many 1st party already developers have.

5. And I definantly agree that Trophies need to be universal across all games. Sony themselves have been very supportive of Trophies because they’ve patched or are coming out with Trophy patches in a lot of Sony PS3 exclusive games… but I haven’t heard too much of 3rd party developers going back and patching old PS3 titles with trophies.

Insomniac has their hands full and are trying to finish up Resistance for November, and I can understand if they can’t patch the first Resistance or Rachet and Clank with trophies right now

The trophy system is still relatively new and I think that for the rest of 2008, I’ll give some developers a little bit of slack, but for 2009, I expect every PS3 game to have trophies. The majority of Sony’s upcoming PS3 exclusive games for this year will have trophies, it’s just that the majority of 3rd party games don’t support trophies and right now Sony themselves are doing a good job of supporting their own trophy system, it’s the 3rd party developers that need to start putting trophies in their games and next year I expect that every 3rd party PS3 game should have trophies.

Just curious, why does the PS3 need to beat the 360? I mean if we are all true gamers, and the 360 is doing it right and PS3 is not, then why not just buy the 360, in consumer electronics you don’t root for the underdog (PS3) you root for the product that is giving consumers what they want (360). This silly brand loyalty can and will destroy the industry if you guys keep it up.

I think its a matter of time, but the question is, how long will it take them to wake up and smell the coffee. They should be takeing advantage of the LBP game into marketing this fall. Games like socom aswel. Sony will have to have something this fall, if not then M$ is going to be the new face of gameing, which connot happen.

(it’s been awhile since i’ve seen a nintendo commercial)
